FOUNDER & DIRECTOR

Sonya Yusuf, founder and director of Seeds of Equity

Sonya Yusuf’s commitment to educational equity and human development stems from her childhood experience attending a Montessori school in the inner city. It was not an elite school, but a true community school that welcomed families from diverse racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Through a sliding-scale tuition model, families contributed what they could afford, which made Montessori education accessible to children from many different financial circumstances. The school was more than a place of learning. It was a community of families who built friendships, embraced diversity, and shared a commitment to their children’s growth and development.

Growing up in this environment shaped Sonya’s understanding of education and its power to transform individuals and communities. Montessori philosophy taught her the importance of treating children with dignity and respect, honoring their individual interests, and recognizing each child's unique strengths and potential. When children are trusted, respected, and encouraged to explore their interests, they develop independence, confidence, compassion, and respect for others and the world around them. They learn to recognize their strengths and use their abilities to make meaningful contributions to society.

Sonya believes these principles reach far beyond the classroom. In her view, a world where people value one another’s dignity, embrace differences, and follow the Golden Rule, treating others as they wish to be treated, would be a more peaceful, compassionate, and harmonious place to live.

Her commitment to accessible education deepened during more than a decade of living and working in sub-Saharan Africa. There, she saw firsthand the barriers many children face in getting an education and how a family’s finances could limit a child’s opportunities. These experiences inspired her to establish a school in her own neighborhood, guided by the belief that every child deserves quality education, regardless of family income or circumstances.

Sonya holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, a Master of Arts in Education in Montessori Leadership, and two Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) diplomas in Primary and Elementary education. Her academic preparation, Montessori training, and international experience have strengthened her dedication to creating learning environments where children are valued as individuals and encouraged to grow into thoughtful, capable, and compassionate members of society.

As the founder of Seeds of Equity, Sonya works to advance equitable access to education and to support the growth of individuals and communities through meaningful learning opportunities. She believes education is more than gaining knowledge. It is a foundation for human dignity, personal growth, social responsibility, and positive change.
